Hey Love, bring on your sunny glow!…
I’m not going to sugarcoat it; when I officially became an empty nester, I didn’t know how I was going to make it while trying to remain sane. It was brutal, and it lasted longer than I thought it would.

But you know, as they say in life, things change and emotions evolve. I did survive it, of course; I can even joke about it now. And I guess the worst part was that I was alone, feeling like I was engulfed in a storm that only I knew about.
A New Routine
But, it is during this time that I found myself meditating more than ever before, seeking to gather the scattered pieces of my life and put them back together. Not too long ago, I had a conversation with a friend who is married and soon to be an empty nester. We discussed the emotions surrounding this new phase in life, particularly for single parents. The dialogue centered around the unique emptiness a single parent may feel, lacking the companionship they once relied on. While my friend held her opinion, I stood firm in my belief that single empty nesters may face even greater challenges in adjusting to this transition.
Single Parents and Empty Nesting
This article, written by Angela Cavaney, Ph.D., and published by the Trybe Social Club, titled ‘Empty Nest for Single Moms‘ hits home as she explores the challenges and advantages faced by single parents in the empty nest phase. I found it very relatable, and I’m glad to have read it.
In this insightful article, Cavaney, sheds light on the unique challenges faced by single parents when their children move out of the family home. Cavaney emphasizes the often unnoticed difficulties encountered by single empty nesters and highlights the importance of approaching this phase with a proactive mindset. She writes the following:
“Many single parents face a unique set of challenges when their children move out of the family home. These challenges often go unnoticed or overlooked, particularly by married empty nesters, but they can have a significantly negative impact on the mental and emotional well-being of single parents….. I cannot stress enough the importance of embracing this new chapter of your life with an open mind and adventurous spirit. The empty nest phase might seem daunting and lonely to the single empty nester, but with the right mindset and a proactive approach, it CAN be a time that is brimming with opportunities for personal growth and exploration.” (Source: Cavaney, Angela, Ph.D. “Empty Nest for Single Moms.” Trybe Social Club.
New Opportunities
Single parenting and empty nesting can open up exciting new opportunities as your children settle into their own lives. It’s the perfect time to focus on yourself—explore new hobbies, dive into interests you’ve set aside, and build strong connections within your community. This phase is all about rediscovering your own path while embracing the freedom that comes with it.
As a lone empty nester, I found this article incredibly resonant, and I highly encourage other single empty nesters to give it a read. I found myself nodding along with most of the points addressed, considering them verified by my own experiences. Indeed, the aspect of new beginnings stands out as a significant advantage for me. As the empty nest syndrome sets in, single parents face a watershed moment in their lives. It allows them to regain their space, time, and identity. There is a chance to rekindle passions, go after dreams, and strengthen self-connection in the stillness.
Final Thoughts
As time passed and I found myself with more opportunities for self-care, personal growth, and pursuing my own dreams, I also gained the privilege of supporting my son in his aspirations. This phase in my life has granted me a greater sense of autonomy, opening the door to exciting new relationships and the opportunity for a fresh second start in life.
The truth is that there are new beginnings as the empty nest is settling, and you should open yourselves up to this world of possibilities, resulting in a lively new chapter filled with meaning and fulfillment. Strap in tight, because this ride promises to be quite the enjoyable experience!
Though my nest may be empty, it remains the most significant part of my life. My nest overflows with love and gratitude!
